Couchsurfing in Lyon: local guide

Updated · Written for travellers staying with local hosts

Lyon is often called France's food capital, and locals take that reputation seriously without being snobbish about it. The city sits where the Rhône and Saône rivers meet, with Renaissance lanes on one bank, old silk-weavers' slopes on the hill, and a modern business district beyond. Hosts are often students from the large universities, young engineers, chefs and hospitality workers, and families who have lived in the same quartier for generations. It is cheaper than Paris and easier to get around. Local insight: ask your host to show you a traboule, one of the covered passageways the silk workers used to carry cloth through buildings without getting wet, many of them hidden behind ordinary doors.

Best neighbourhoods in Lyon for travellers

Vieux Lyon
The Renaissance old town on the Saône's west bank, with cobbled streets, traboules and traditional bouchons. Beautiful, but busy with visitors.
Croix-Rousse
The hill of the old silk weavers, with steep stairways, a big morning market and a village feel.
Presqu'île
The central peninsula between the two rivers, with grand squares, shopping streets and easy access to everything.
La Guillotière
A multicultural area on the Rhône's east bank, with cheap international food and a student crowd.
Confluence
A redeveloped district at the rivers' meeting point, with modern architecture, riverside walks and a shopping centre.

Getting around Lyon

TCL runs Lyon's metro, trams, buses and funiculars, which climb to Fourvière and Saint-Just. The Vélo'v bike-share scheme is good value, and the riverbanks have long cycle paths. The Rhônexpress tram links the airport with the Part-Dieu station quickly but costs more than city transport. Most central districts are walkable, though Croix-Rousse and Fourvière involve climbs.

Lyon on a budget

Bouchons, Lyon's traditional restaurants, often offer good-value set lunches. Markets like Croix-Rousse and the riverside Quai Saint-Antoine are great for bread, cheese and charcuterie for picnics. La Guillotière has cheap kebabs, pho and North African food. Bakeries and supermarkets keep breakfast and lunch cheap. Costs rise in Vieux Lyon's restaurants and during the Fête des Lumières in December.

Free things to do in Lyon

  • Climb to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière
  • Explore the traboules of Vieux Lyon and Croix-Rousse
  • Wander Parc de la Tête d'Or and its free zoo
  • Visit the Roman theatres on Fourvière hill
  • See the Fresque des Lyonnais trompe-l'oeil mural
  • Walk or cycle the Berges du Rhône riverside path

Staying with a host in Lyon: etiquette

Say bonjour when entering shops and greeting neighbours. Among friends, greetings are la bise. Lunch is typically at noon or one, and dinner around eight. Meals are taken seriously, so sit at the table and avoid rushing. Bringing wine, flowers or pastries is appreciated. Try to speak some French, as English is less widely spoken than in Paris. Keep noise low in apartment buildings, especially in the evenings.

Best time to visit Lyon

Spring and early autumn are best for walking and eating outdoors. Summer can be hot, and the Fête des Lumières in early December is spectacular but very crowded.

A bouchon is a traditional Lyonnais restaurant serving hearty local dishes such as quenelles, saucisson brioché and andouillette, usually with simple decor and checked tablecloths. Many offer set lunch menus that are good value. Look for small, family-run places rather than those advertising heavily to tourists in Vieux Lyon. Ask your host which bouchon they trust.

Generally yes. Food, drinks and transport tend to cost less in Lyon, and the city is compact enough to walk or cycle most places. Markets and set lunch menus help keep costs down. Accommodation can still be pricey during big events, which is when having a local host helps the most.

The Fête des Lumières is Lyon's festival of lights, held over several nights in early December. Buildings across the city are lit with projections and installations, and many residents place candles in their windows on the evening of 8 December. It draws huge crowds, so book transport early and ask your host about quieter viewing spots.
