Couchsurfing in Lima: local guide

Updated · Written for travellers staying with local hosts

Lima is often a stopover on the way to Cusco, but it deserves time. Built on cliffs above the Pacific, it is a city of grey winter skies, sunny summers and one of the world's great food cultures. Limenos are friendly, family-oriented hosts, and you may stay with students, young professionals in Miraflores or Barranco, or families in districts like Surco or Pueblo Libre who will insist you try ceviche properly. The city sprawls and traffic is heavy, so a host near the Metropolitano bus line or the coast is helpful. Budget travellers eat superbly from markets and menu lunch spots, walk the clifftop parks and explore the historic centre. Ask your host about the best cevicheria in their district.

Best neighbourhoods in Lima for travellers

Miraflores
Clifftop parks, the Malecon walkway and many cafes; safe, central and popular with visitors.
Barranco
Bohemian district of old mansions, galleries, street art and bars, next to Miraflores.
Centro Historico
Colonial churches, the Plaza de Armas and grand balconies; a UNESCO-listed area best visited by day.
Pueblo Libre and Magdalena
Quieter residential districts with traditional bars, markets and local restaurants.
Surquillo
Next to Miraflores but cheaper, with a famous food market and good local eateries.

Getting around Lima

Lima's transport is a mix of the Metropolitano bus rapid transit, the Metro Line 1, and many private buses and combis. The Metropolitano links Barranco, Miraflores and the centre, paid with a rechargeable card. From Jorge Chavez airport, airport express buses and ride-hailing are common choices. Traffic is heavy, so walking or cycling along the coast between Miraflores and Barranco is pleasant.

Lima on a budget

Lima offers excellent cheap food. The menu, a set lunch of starter and main, is inexpensive at local restaurants. Ceviche at market stalls, anticuchos from street grills, and chifa, Peruvian-Chinese food, are great value. Mercado de Surquillo is good for fresh produce. Costs rise sharply in famous restaurants and in Miraflores cafes catering to tourists.

Free things to do in Lima

  • Walk the Miraflores Malecon clifftop parks
  • Cross Barranco's Bridge of Sighs
  • Explore the Plaza de Armas and historic centre
  • Watch paragliders above the Costa Verde
  • See the Parque del Amor sculpture and mosaic walls
  • Visit Huaca Pucllana from outside at sunset

Staying with a host in Lima: etiquette

Limenos greet with a single cheek kiss among women and between men and women, and handshakes between men. Lunch is the main meal and can last a while; dinner is lighter. Hosts may offer you lots of food; accepting is polite. Shoes are generally kept on indoors. Bringing sweets or a dessert, like alfajores, is a nice gift. Spanish is important outside tourist areas.

Best time to visit Lima

December to April is sunny and warm, the best time for the coast. From June to October, the sky is often grey with garua mist, though mild and dry.

Lima is worth at least a few days. It is one of the world's great food cities, with ceviche, chifa and street food at every budget, and the coastline, historic centre and Barranco's arts scene are rewarding. Staying with a host helps you discover family-run restaurants and neighbourhood life beyond the main tourist areas.

Airport express buses run to Miraflores and other districts, and ride-hailing apps are widely used and reasonably priced. Avoid unofficial taxis at the airport. Public buses are cheaper but crowded and confusing for first-timers, especially with luggage. Travel times vary a lot with traffic.

Lima has a desert climate cooled by the Humboldt Current. From about June to October, a low layer of cloud and mist called garua covers the city, so it is grey and mild but rarely rains. Summer months bring clear skies and sunshine, ideal for the beaches.
