Couchsurfing in Athens: local guide

Updated · Written for travellers staying with local hosts

Athens rewards travellers who look past the Acropolis and spend time in its dense, lived-in neighbourhoods. Hosts are often students, artists, teachers and young professionals, many living in the polykatoikia, the concrete apartment blocks with balconies that define the city, in districts like Exarchia, Pangrati and Koukaki. Greek hospitality, known as filoxenia, is deeply rooted, and hosts often want to feed you and show you their favourite tavernas. For budget travellers, Athens offers cheap street food, free hilltop viewpoints and a relaxed outdoor life that lasts well into the night. A local can show you where Athenians actually eat and drink, which is rarely in Plaka, and how to time sightseeing around the midday heat.

Best neighbourhoods in Athens for travellers

Koukaki
Just south of the Acropolis, with small cafés, bakeries and easy walks up Filopappou Hill. Central but residential.
Exarchia
The student and anarchist district near the Polytechnic, full of bookshops, cheap bars and political graffiti. Lively and independent-minded.
Pangrati
A relaxed residential area near the Panathenaic Stadium, with good tavernas and a strong local café culture.
Psyrri
Near Monastiraki, packed with bars, street art and late-night eateries. Busy and noisy at weekends.
Kypseli
A dense, multicultural neighbourhood with a pedestrianised boulevard, the Fokionos Negri, and renovated municipal market.

Getting around Athens

Athens has three metro lines, plus trams, buses, trolleybuses and the suburban railway, all run under the OASA system. Contactless cards and the reloadable ATH.ENA card work at the gates. The metro line 3 and the suburban railway run to the airport, which costs more than a regular ticket but much less than a taxi; express buses are cheaper still. The historic centre is compact and best explored on foot, though summer heat makes walking hard in the middle of the day.

Athens on a budget

Souvlaki and gyros wraps are the classic cheap meal, and bakeries sell filling pies such as spanakopita and tiropita. Laiki agora, weekly street markets in each neighbourhood, are good for cheap fruit and vegetables. The Central Market on Athinas Street is fun to browse. Ancient sites are the main expense; combined tickets can save money if you plan to see several. Plaka's restaurants are pricier, while tavernas in Pangrati and Kypseli offer better value.

Free things to do in Athens

  • Climb Filopappou Hill for Acropolis views at sunset
  • Walk Lycabettus Hill's footpath for panoramic city views
  • Watch the changing of the guard at Syntagma Square
  • Stroll the pedestrian Dionysiou Areopagitou promenade
  • Explore the National Garden beside the Parliament
  • Browse the Monastiraki flea market on Sunday mornings

Staying with a host in Athens: etiquette

Greeks are warm and expressive hosts, and turning down food or a coffee can seem unfriendly. A handshake or two kisses on the cheek are common greetings; follow your host's lead. Shoes are often removed indoors, though less strictly than in Central Europe. Meal times are late, with lunch around mid-afternoon and dinner well after 9pm. The afternoon rest period is still respected in many households, so keep noise down. A small gift of sweets or something from home is appreciated.

Best time to visit Athens

April to June and September to October offer warm weather without the punishing heat of July and August. Winter is mild and quiet, a good time for museums and low-key travel.

Express buses such as the X95 to Syntagma Square run around the clock and are usually the cheapest option. The metro line 3 is faster and more predictable, but the airport ticket costs more than a standard fare. Both are much cheaper than a taxi, especially if you are travelling alone.

Athens is one of the more affordable Western European capitals. Street food, bakeries, local tavernas and public transport are all reasonably priced, and many of the best views are free. The main costs are entry fees to archaeological sites and eating in tourist areas like Plaka, so a combined ticket and local tavernas help a lot.

Yes. Piraeus, reachable by metro, is Greece's main port, with ferries to the Cyclades, Dodecanese and Saronic islands. Rafina and Lavrio, east of the city, serve some islands with shorter crossings. Slow conventional ferries are usually cheaper than high-speed boats, and deck-class tickets are the budget choice.
